Apple to Allow Installing Apps from Third-Party App Store in EU

Apple has always been known for its ecosystem and its strictness when it comes to users’ privacy. iPhone and iPad users were strictly limited to downloading apps from the App Store due to the restrictions laid by Apple. However, this limitation will now be removed from iOS for good.Apple recently announced that it will change the app ecosystem because of the current EU Digital Market Act which will come into action in March 2024. As per the DMA, Apple should give the option to download apps from other sources and also protect the privacy of users. This act is good for both iPhone users as well as the developers. iPhone users will now have more options to download apps and not just the Apple App Store. They will be able to download the apps that are not available on the App Store. For the developers, Apple will now have to reduce the fees they charge from developers to keep their apps on the App Store.Until now, developers had to push their apps to Apple App Store if they wanted to serve the iOS users for which they have to pay significantly higher fees than other app stores. With the new DMA act, developers will have the option to push their apps to other apps to serve iOS users and bear less cost. Eventually, Apple will have to reduce the App Store fees for developers to keep up with the business.Apart from this, Apple will also introduce some notarization checks for the safety of the users. Apple was strict with apps on the Apple App Store; apps on the App Store were safe because of the checks laid out by Apple. Now that Apple will have to allow third-party app stores it will be difficult for the company to keep them in check. For this Apple will be introducing some notarization checks, to prevent users from installing any unsafe apps from third-party app stores that can lead to breach of privacy of the users.Apart from that, Apple will also allow NFC so that users can use other wallets and not stay limited to Apple Wallet. Also, users will now be able to switch their default browser from Safari to any other which was not possible earlier. All these changes will come into action by March 2024. Apple has confirmed these changes in their official press release. By the beginning of March 2024, these changes will be implemented in 27 countries of the EU and might come to other regions later on.
