Apple announced the M1 Ultra at the Spring Launch Event. It is the most powerful processor designed for the new Apple computer i.e. Mac Studio. Apple announced the M1 Ultra chip consisting of two M1 Max chips that are connected with a new interconnect architecture that the company named Ultra Fusion. Apple said that M1 Ultra doubled the size of previous M1 chips because of the new connection technology i.e Ultra Fusion.
Since it is confirmed that the M1 Ultra consists of two M1 chips therefore the Ultra M1 will provide a feature of twice the CPU and GPU crores. M1 Ultra doubles the resource of M1 Max and features a 20-core CPU, up to 64-core GPU, a 32-core neural engine for machine learning workloads and all of these are twice the M1 Max. The M1 Ultra consists of up to 128 GB of unified memory. According to the company, it is said that all of these should be 8 times faster than the M1, but it is not known about which desktop chips it is comparing.
According to the company announcement, M1 Ultra can match the Intel peak performance by using 100W less. The company claims that the M1 Ultra will provide, 90% of the performance for the same power consumption as an Intel Core i9-12900k. In M1 Ultra the memory bandwidth is also higher than the last version i.e. 800MP/s. This model of M1 Ultra is accessible to both CPU and GPU as compared to the other models.
M1 Ultra has some unique features like doubling of media engine blocks i.e. it has a playback of up to 18 streams of 8k ProRes 422 video at the same time. The M1 Ultra supports up to 5 displays four of which are 6K Pro display XDR and one 4K display. M1 Ultra will work on a single processor which means that the program will run automatically without being changed. macOS has been designed in such a way that it will scale with the hardware. Due to this, it can automatically take the advantage of increased performance of chips.
